River

I borrowed a dog for the weekend.

I had my heart set on attending the Humane Society's "Walk & Wag" event today. I don't have a dog, and I didn't need one to attend but I wanted to bring a furry companion with me.

I tried to borrow several dogs but it seems a dog who can walk on a leash and plays well with others is hard to find. I was given a tip, however, that a lady who works near me has a foster dog named River, and I could probably take her to the event.

Arrangements were made and suddenly I was sharing my tiny apartment with one of the sweetest creatures I have ever met for one weekend.

She is so gentle. She walks well on a leash. She's calm and laid back. She is an awesome dog.

Poor River has a sad story. She is called River because she was found swimming in the Detroit River and was rescued by a man in a boat. Some children playing nearby told the animal rescue folks who arrived on the scene that a man had thrown her in.

She had signs of abuse, and she is still afraid of men. At the event today, she would let any woman pet her but would shy away from males.

I don't understand how anyone could be so cruel to any animal, let alone one as nice as her. River is such a good dog. I can't imagine why someone would mistreat her so badly.

I'm so thankful that she is in a loving foster home. There are great people out there dedicated to helping creatures like her make the best of their lives and find loving companions. I sincerely hope she can live the rest of her days in doggy bliss.

To River's future parent(s): Hurry up! Your sweetheart is waiting to come home with you forever!!
